HarrellGuides: Department Time Savers

In 2011, Harrell HSL began a new service: department-specific web guides to information, or HarrellGuides.  With input from faculty and staff in various departments, Harrell librarians create webpages that contain links to the specific electronic journals, e-books, databases, and other information sources that the department finds the most useful.

For example, the Surgery HarrellGuide went live in July 2011 and features a page for each of the 11 surgery divisions, and links surgery faculty to:

  • the most important electronic journals for each division;
  • electronic versions of required texts for their residents;
  • lists of "landmark articles" with links to the full-text;
  • websites of professional associations and educational sites;
  • PubMed search boxes right within the guide;
  • automatically updated tables of contents from heavily used journals such as Journal of Pediatric Surgery;
  • handy links to workplace tools such as ACGME Case Logs, SmartWeb, and Medical Imaging.

Faculty and residents in the Department of Surgery will present the Surgery HarrellGuide as a poster session at the upcoming Association of Surgical Educators conference in March, 2012.

Peter Dillon, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery, has this to say about the Surgery HarrellGuide:"The development of the Department of Surgery's e-library through HarrellGuides has been a tremendous advancement for our educational, research, and patient care programs.  Our e-library provides us with instant and easy access to countless electronic resources within the institution and on the web.  Its structure has enabled us to make our resident and medical student curriculum completely web based and in conjunction with portable tablet devices has made the latest disease and treatment information available to faculty, residents, and students at the patient's bedside."

Harrell HSL has created HarrellGuides for the Department of Pediatrics (http://harrell.library.psu.edu/pediatrics) and for the
Department of Orthopaedics (http://harrell.library.psu.edu/orthopaedics). HarrellGuides can be used on or off-campus.  They are listed on the Harrell HSL website, http://med.psu.edu/library.  They are also available to the public, although authentication is required for access to full-text electronic articles and e-books.
