How Do I Use Mendeley?

Information and tips for getting the most out of Mendeley at Penn State Hershey George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library.

Issues Limiting Support for Mendeley

There are currently two significant issues limiting support for Mendeley:

1. The app-based Word plug-in for Mendeley is restricted for both Penn State Office 365 and Penn State Health Office 365, but only for users within the College of Medicine or Penn State Health.

2. The citation import format for PubMed (.nbib) no longer works with Mendeley. PubMed citations need to be converted from .nbib format to the .ris format.  There are two free converters available from Paperpile:

  • BibTeX to RIS Converter - need to change the drop-down menu option default of "BibTex" to "PubMed (*.nib format)"
  • PMID to RIS Converter - Best if PubMed "Display options" are set to the "PMID" format, then the output is copied & pasted into the Converter.

We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Mendeley & Word

Mendeley can be used with Microsoft Word to create in-text citations and bibliographies.

This guide will go over the following topics:

  • Using Mendeley with MS Word
  • Editing Citations & Bibliography

Use the links to the left or the drop-down menu at the top of the Mendeley & Word tab.  Each section will have simple step-by-step instructions and a few more details about the topic.  Links to external video tutorials are also included, when available.

Please note that the Mendeley Cite Add-In is not enabled for either PSU or PSH Office 365 accounts.  Access to the Mendeley Cite Add-In can be requested by submitting an IT Ticket.  PSH IT Home (PSH) - on Infonet |  PSU IS Service Portal
