How Do I Navigate the Publication World?

Typical Considerations

DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?:  Ask JANE!  If you are working in a biomedical field, consider using the Journal Author Name Estimator, or JANE, to help select publication venues.  Simply enter your abstract and/or title to see a list of suggested journals based on your research.  http://jane.biosemantics.org/.  This is a good place to start.

If you use EndNote or EndNote Online, you have another helpful option deciding where to publish. EndNote has a Manuscript Matcher feature in EndNote Online (accessible under Groups in EndNote X9).

Login/create an account in EndNote Online: https://access.clarivate.com/login?app=endnote
Once logged in, click on the Match tab
Once on the Match page, follow the directions for entering information
A list of the top 10 journal suggestions will be produced, in order of their ISI Impact Factor: http://isi-impactfactor.com/

AUDIENCE - PubMed:  If your target audience typically reads journal articles found in PubMed, be sure your article is published in a journal that is indexed in PubMed.  Indexing information is often provided by the publisher on the journal's website.  In addition, a journal's inclusion in PubMed often reflects its acceptance as a quality publication.  It is also possible to search the National Library of Medicine catalog for your desired journal.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals

AUDIENCE - Open to Everyone:  Do you want to have your publication as freely available to researchers as possible regardless of institutional subscription?  Have you considered open access publishing?  Visit our Open Access site as well as SPARC's resource for more information on this way of sharing scientific scholarship.

JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR:  Use Clarivate's Journal Citation Report to find the impact score of your desired journal as well as research journals in your subject area.  Journal Citation Reports

Other considerations:

Consider a journal's reputation in your specific field.  Is there a top journal where you would like to be published?

Does your funder (grant) require public access to your publication? Public access guide

Does your institution or department have any specific requirements for publishing?

VISIT A JOURNAL'S WEBSITE AND LOOK FOR INFORMATION SUCH AS:

  • Discoverability - Where is the journal indexed?
  • Acceptance rate
  • Cost
  • Peer review procedures and timeline
  • Defining who can be an author
